The World Wide Web or the Web, is the most exciting part of the Internet. It contains information on all kinds of subjects, which is presented in a variety of interesting ways including words, pictures, animation’s, sounds and video. Every day, more and more people add information to the Web by setting up or “building” their own web site.

What is a web site?

The information on the Web is contained in millions of computer documents, known as web pages, which you look at on a computer screen. Every web address has a unique address known as it uniform resource locator (URL). A URL specifies exactly where on the web a page is stored so it can be found easily.  A web site is a group of web pages created by a person or organisation. The pages on a web site are linked together.  You can move from one page to another by clicking on words and pictures called hyperlinks.

Individual Internet user build web sites to tell others about themselves, their families and friends.  They often include information about their hobbies and interests.

Web sites are a great way for businesses to provide up to date information about their products and services.  Many commercial sites contain forms that customers can use to order and pay for the things that are advertised.

All sorts of organisations use the web to find out about other web users.  For example, companies often include forms on their sites to discover their customer’s preferences and opinions.  Companies can use the information they collect to make improvement their products or services.

Have fun

Entertainment companies use the web to promote TV shows, movies and musicians.  News updates, pictures, sound clips and short video keep fans informed and entertained.  There are also sites built by individuals with jokes, cartoons, games and stories.

Support a cause

Charities, political parties and religious organisations use web sites to explain their goals and beliefs.  Many of these sites contain details of an organisations campaigns and achievement.  A site may also include instructions for people who want to send money for get involved.

Share knowledge

Researchers, students and specialists in every field build web sites to share useful information.  From recipes to medical advice, academic articles to drawing techniques, there is a wealth of free information in the web.
